Product Description Robin Jean Brown understands firsthand the deep bond that can develop between person and animal. She's not some cold psychologist, but rather a pet owner herself who dealt with her own painful journey through the grieving process. She found that there wasn't a lot of help for her. Other books are either too cold and clinical...or they're too sad, and just make you cry harder. And none of them had workbook-style questions to guide her through her journey. So Robin wrote the guide herself -- to deal with your grief, effectively and step by step. She is personal, empathetic, and comforting -- yet at the same time she'll help you move through your grief.

Helped Me Work Through My Pain January 10, 2006 Linda Stevens 62 out of 62 found this review helpful
When my darling lab mix died recently, I bought several books on pet loss grief recovery and this one helped me the most.
What helped me about this book were two things, which I'll mention first, and then explain. Those two things are:
1. The workbook questions.
2. The unique, balanced tone of this book.
Now I'll explain:
The workbook questions - This is a highly interactive book. You don't just read it passively. At first I thought the questions would hurt too much to do (one of the questions has you write the story of how you came to choose your pet above all others), but as I wrote out my answers to them, I felt better. I also felt happy as so many wonderful memories of my dog flooded back to me through the tears.
The unique, balanced tone - The other books I read seemed either too uncaring or -- at the opposite extreme -- too sad. Instead "How to ROAR" is written by a highly empathetic author who also helps you to work through the grief and get to "acceptance" stage (and beyond) at the other side.
In conclusion, if you've lost your pet (or know someone who has), get Robin Jean Brown's book. It will help to work through the pain and heartache.
THANK YOU For This Book July 28, 2006 Mark Johnson (United States) 21 out of 21 found this review helpful
Losing Marvin, my frisky Siamese cat, was extremely painful for me. He'd been my baby for almost 10 years. He was the sort of cat who'd always follow you around the house and would sleep on your bed.
I bought several books on pet bereavement, and while they were all good, this one was the best. I wrote out my answers to the Journaling Questions, and as I went through the book, I felt my pain subside and give rise to something new: a feeling of acceptance and an ability to focus on the happy memories of Marvin. I highly recommend this book for those suffering from the sadness of losing a pet.
very helpful July 5, 2007 Lori M. Conkle (Gahanna, Ohio United States) 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
this was a gift for my mother. She lost her beloved Beaux san in May. She said although the questions were hard to answer-it helped her work through her grief. She said since it is a work book-it forces you to remember and write down info regarding your pets death, which has been very helpful in helping her come through this very difficult time. Beaux San wasnt just a pet. he was a very loved part of our family. If you need help with the loss of one of your "family members" this is the book for you.

When I first saw the title ROAR i was turned me off as I had just lost my beloved Benji. However, as I read the reviews and learned the author's definition of ROAR - it then made sense. While I did not write in my copy I did use it as a guide in my journaling.
